Presenter Biographies
Details on some of our presenters are below.
Professor David Karoly was a lead author for the two most recent reports of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the United Nations body that digests climate science for government decision makers. According to the ABC, ‘There aren't many people on the planet that know more about climate change.’
Ian Fry is the chief climate change negotiator for the government of Tuvalu. He received international media attention for his interventions at the UN meeting Copenhagen in December, and for leading the call from the Alliance of Small Island states for limiting temperature rise to well below 1.5 degrees.
Christine Milne has been Greens Senator for Tasmania since July 2005, and is Deputy Leader of the Parliamentary Greens.
Bernard Keane is the Canberra correspondent for the widely read online magazine Crikey, and writes on Australian politics and society. You can check out his writing here.
Walden Bello is a member of the Parliament of The Phillipines, and is executive director of Bangkok based NGO Focus on the Global South. He is active in movements for global and climate justice (via video link up)
Clive Spash, a economist, had his work that was critical of carbon trading censored by his former employer CSIRO, who attempted to prevent publication. The CSRIO ‘endeavoured to prevent the paper from being published even in his capacity as a private citizen.’ For more information check out Clive’s website, or these media reports.
Damien Lawson, is the Coordinator of the Victorian Climate Action Centre and a former advisor to Federal Green Senators. He has worked with social movements, unions and NGOs for the past last twenty years.
Phillip Sutton is the Convener of the Greenleap Strategic Institute and co-author of the book "Climate Code Red" the case for emergency action.
Donna Jackson is a woman of Larrakia/Wulna descent. She worked with NT Parks and Wildlife for nine years as technician and ethno-ecological researcher. She has also worked for WWF, Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation, the Northern Land Council (consultant), and lectured in NCRM at Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education and Charles Darwin University. She currently coordinates an independent NGO called the Top End Aboriginal Conservation Alliance (TEACA).
Genevieve Kelly, NSW Secretary of the NTEU and long time anti-nuclear campaigner and community activist. Formerly a Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Sydney where she taught social policy,political economy and community work for 23 years.
Georgina Woods was a founding member of Rising Tide Newcastle, and helped organise the 2009 grassroots climate action summit. She now works as International Coordinator for Climate Action Network Australia.
Mark Ogge has been campaigner with Beyond Zero Emissions for three years. He has played a central role in the directing and organising the group, including initiating the solutions focused monthly Discussion Forums and as a cofounder and director of the Zero Carbon Australia 2020 project.
Keely Boom is the Executive Officer of the Australian Climate Justice Program (ACJP). The ACJP is based on the fundamental premise that the law can be a powerful and effective tool in the campaign for climate protection. Since 2003, the ACJP has executed and supported a range of successful legal actions.
